FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams provide opportunities for students to build robots and learn programming skills starting in 7th grade and continuing through high school. Just like in FRC, team members for strong bonds and develop important life skills. FTC teams are generally 5-10 students, so everyone gets involved in the many tasks needed to succeed. The FIRST Website describes FTC this way:
Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team. The robot kit is reusable from year to year and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Teams design and build robots, raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards. Participants are eligible to apply for $80M+ in college scholarships. FTC Teams in PIE3 are open to any student in public or private school or homeschooled in grades 7-12 (sometimes 6th graders). The team size is 5-12, and teams may accept new members prior to the fall. New teams can be started and mentored if there are volunteers to coach. Mentoring and training for coaches is also provided in these cases. |

While the team number has been around for a long time, it was previously associated with Liberty High School. After the school’s team disbanded in 2012, it was converted into a community team so anyone from the area could join – to include those from public & private schools, as well as those who are homeschooled.
The new team is in its ninth year and has new members from all over Carroll and surrounding counties and consists of 12 team members aged 12+.
