Get Involved!
If you are parent wondering "where can I find a robotics team my child can join?" you are not alone. There are many kids who would love to have the experience of participating in robotics as their 'sport'. But just like any great opportunity for kids, from soccer to scouting, robotics relies on volunteer coaches.
You can coach robotics!! And if you are willing to learn, have a little patience and find a second adult to work with you, we can help provide nearly everything else necessary for your child and others to be part of a robotics team. For the 2024-2025 Season, teams are forming as follows:
- For Grades 9-12: Robo-Lions, FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 2199 is accepting members through January 15, 2025. Use the Contact Us form and let us know the name and age of the interested team member. We will contact you.
- For Grades 7-12: FIRST Tech Challenge Teams are well into the new season (September-March). Use the Contact Us form. After October 31st, there may be no openings for this season. At least one new team can be supported; two adult coaches are required.
- For Grades 4-8: FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams are forming in schools and the community, and such teams are limited by the number of coaches. The season begins officially in August and ends in Maryland in February. There are no events or regular FLL Challenge activities in the spring or summer.
- For Grades K-3: FIRST LEGO League Explore teams can form through May. Two adult coaches can form a new team with 3-7 members.
Not ready to coach? We have one-day volunteer opportunities and welcome interested community members to our events.
Joining a Team
The most common question we hear is "How can my child join a team?" There are many options, but it is not generally just a matter of joining an existing team, with the exception of the FRC teams. Please note:
- Not all teams can accept new members. We are limited by space and/or volunteers.
- The FLL Challenge and FTC Seasons kick-off in September; new members should join between April and September to fully participate. FLL Explore has a rolling season and is very flexible. FRC is year-round, and open to new members on an ongoing basis, though the schedule from January-March is very hectic and it is best to join before January.
- If you would like to learn more about coaching your own team, and what is required for PIE3 support, please see these pages.
- We try to reply within one week to all requests, but some times of the year are particularly hectic. Thanks for your patience!
- If you are not sure about what the programs entail, please see www.firstinspires.org for all the details, or visit or FAQs page.
